Final Presentation Instructions

SNR 690. Contemporary Approaches to Quantitative Methods

Overview

Each student will deliver a final project presentation to the class. Your presentation should focus on your analytical methods. I want to see that you can explain and defend your methodological choices.

In-Class Roles for Presentation Days

Each presentation day, the following roles will be assigned to students in the audience:

Role Responsibility
Scribe Captures key feedback and questions during the presentation. Will share the notes, and will be uploaded to the website
Timekeeper Keeps the presenter on schedule (signals at 12 min and 15 min)
Moderator Introduces the presenters, manages Q&A
Feedback assistant Collects all feedback from all students and data from the Scribe

Role assignments will be randomly selected. Send me an email if you cannot do a particular date.

Format and Timing

Element Time
Presentation 15 minutes MAXIMUM
Q&A 2–3 minutes
TOTAL 17 minutes MAXIMUM
  • Format: PowerPoint (or equivalent slide-based presentation)
WarningStrict Timing Policy

You cannot go over 15 minutes. There will be a strict timeline during the presentations. A timekeeper will signal you at 12 minutes and again at 15 minutes. If you reach 15 minutes, you will be asked to wrap up immediately.

Plan and practice your presentation to fit within the time limit. Going over time affects every presenter who follows you and will be reflected in your Structure score on the peer assessment. The presentation and Q&A together should not exceed 17 minutes. If you have a lot of material, consider cutting some of it to ensure you can finish on time. The presentations will start on the published time.

What to Cover in Your Presentation

Your presentation should focus on your analytical methods and results. Use the following as a guide:

  1. Research question — State it clearly at the beginning. What are you trying to answer?
  2. Data and study design — Briefly describe your data structure, response variable(s), and predictor variable(s). Keep this concise.
  3. Methods — This is the core of your presentation. Explain:
    • What method you chose and why
    • Your model specification
    • How your method aligns with your question and data (the Method-Question-Data Triangle)
  4. Assumptions and assumption checks — Show how you evaluated your model’s assumptions and what you found.
  5. Results — Present your key findings with figures and/or tables. Interpret the results. Do not just show R output.
  6. Conclusions — Summarize what you found and how it answers your research question. Mention key limitations.

Peer Assessment

Your presentation will be assessed by the other students in the class. Each audience member will provide feedback and scores based on the following criteria:

Criterion Description
Clarity Was the research question and motivation clearly communicated?
Methods Were the analytical methods well-explained and justified?
Results Were the results presented clearly and accurately?
Structure Was the presentation well-organized and within the time limit?
Engagement Did the presenter engage the audience and respond well to questions?

The feedback assistant will collect the peer assessments and share a summary of the feedback with each presenter.
